Summary

[edit]
Description Lot-2916-2: Russian Intervention, 1918-1920. Where 280 Russians Walked Plank. From this dock at Novorosissk on the Black Sea, where a British vessel is seen discharging a cargo of American Red Cross supplies for the populations of South Russia, 280 Russian naval officers were drowned, in March 1918, by the order of the Soviet authorities. It has since become a place of terror for the superstitious people of the region who believe the ghosts of the dead officers walk here at night seeking vengeance. Many longshore men refused to unload supplies at this point, pleading their dread of the haunted spot. Photograph received April 1920. American Red Cross Collection.
