Description
English: Black sea bass or "Jew fish", [ Giant sea bass ], Weight: 416 pounds, length, 7 feet 10 inches; girth, 5 feet 11 inches. Time, 2 hours and 15 minutes, caught on July 28, 1901, at Catalina Island, California, with rod and reel by Mrs. A. W. Barret of Los Angeles[1], boatman Jim Gardner, Avalon. f rugged mountains, separated by deep gorges, or winding creeks. A large portion of this mountain region has been set aside by the government as a forest reserve. These mountains afford an ideal picnic ground for the residents of the plains. Here may be found good shooting and trout fishing-. The geologist and the botanist will never be at a loss for new discoveries. But the main attraction which these mountains offer is to the health-seekerand the rest-seeker, fagged and brain weary from the pursuit of the strenuous life. Here he may get next to mother nature, and go back to take up the round of daily life with renewed vigor, after breathing the pure ozone laden air of the mountains. Several good roads lead into the heart of these mountains, and there are trails to some of the highest peaks, available for pedestrians or riders. In one case, a notable cable incline and electric railroad has been constructed, to Alpine Tavern, on the side of Mount Lowe, 5,000 feet above the sea.

GREAT FISHING. The Pacific Ocean abounds with fish of many varieties, furnishing- an acceptable variety of diet, and also affording much sport to disciples of Isaac Walton. There is good fishing all along the coast of Southern California, but of all the points where ocean fishing is indulged in, there is none to compare with the peerless bay of Avalon, on Catalina Island, about thirty miles from the mainland. Fishing at this place has becomeso celebrated that visitors come from all over the United States, and not infrequently from foreign countries, to participate in it. Many varieties of fish are caught at Catalina, including big yellowtail and barracuda, but the most famous of all, and the one that is most highly prized by the expert angler, is the tuna, one of the most gamy fishes that swims the waters of any ocean.
