Summary[edit]

Description

Just after a liquid lunch with my friend, Jeff, we were returning to our seats (It was a County game so there were plenty to choose from) we came across this scene. Many visitors to the ground come to see not the game but the ground itself and the wonderful architecture in many different styles it contains. Behind the Tour Guide is the playing field with the Pavilion dating from 1890 but above our heads is the 21st Century Media Centre which has more in common with a spaceship than the Victorian edifice that is the Pavilion. Anyway this young woman's boyfriend was interested in what the guide had to say but, amazingly, she didn't. She was stood there gazing into space so I thought I might take this opportunity to capture the beauty of her pale legs.

It was at this point that the guide asked if anyone knew why the Nursery End was so named. Most people believe it is because it is where the training ground is with the Nets for practising but it in reality it was a market garden before Thomas Lord bought the patch of land in 1840 to expand the ground he bought in 1814 so he could accomodate more spectators and bookmakers. Cricket it seems was much more popular in the early 19th Century than it is today.
