Summary[edit]
DescriptionLong Pond Road overpass, Lake Ontario State Parkway, Greece, New York - 20220131.jpg |
English: The Long Pond Road viaduct over the Lake Ontario State Parkway in the town of Greece, New York, as seen on a sunny January 2022 afternoon. Extending 35 miles along the shoreline of its namesake lake in Orleans and Monroe Counties, the Lake Ontario State Parkway was one of several landscaped motorways conceived in the 1940s by New York State Council of Parks chairman Robert Moses as a means of accommodating a projected increase in automobile traffic after World War II. The first segment to open to traffic - the 18 miles from Hamlin Beach State Park east to Dewey Avenue in the suburban community of Greece - was completed in 1958, and the Long Pond Road overpass is one of four original bridges that are still extant today. Its rustic design, featuring graceful arches and an exterior veneer of rugged Medina sandstone, betrays the influence of the Bronx River Parkway, whose curvilinear, nature-centric aesthetic is consciously imitated by its upstate counterpart. The Lake Ontario State Parkway was originally intended as a toll-free, northerly alternative to the New York State Thruway for traffic between Buffalo/Niagara Falls and Rochester, and would have extended westward to the Robert Moses Parkway at Youngstown had it been completed. However, the parkway ultimately only saw one westward extension (to Lakeside Beach State Park in 1972) before lower-than-expected traffic counts caused the cancellation of the remainder of the project. |
