Long Meadow, Looking south from Endale Arch, Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY, April 16, 2005, about 6:30 AM EST. Later in the year, and later in the day, the Long Meadow becomes one of the most densely populated regions of Prospect Park, as picnickers, sun bathers, sportsmen of all stripes, take to this large rolling open field and play. Mid-April in New York, the ground is still muddy in patches and the fun-seekers have yet to arrive.

The Long Meadow constitutes one of three major divisions of Prospect Park; it is an open savannah that plays a foil to the hilly, wooded Ravine and the 60 acre lake, both which constitute the other two divisions of the Park. The Long Meadow runs roughly south for a half mile, then bends to the southwest as it flows against the western flank of Sullivan Hill on the east side of the Long Meadow. Lindens, sweetgums, English Elms, and tulip tree break up the lawn in an irregular way; by design it is difficult to ascertain where the edge of the Meadow ends and the surrounding forests begin.
