Summary[edit]

Description
English: Photo taken at the Lofoten War Memorial Museum (Norwegian: Lofoten Krigsminnemuseum) in Svolvær, Norway's largest exhibition of uniforms and smaller items related to the Second World War and the German occupation of Norway 1940 – 1945:
  • Craftwork done by a Norwegian officer in German captivity: a knife shaped from a soup bone and a wooden chair leg, and a belt woven from collected cellophane from cigarette packs, with a bone buckle. The items were crafted by the officer Karl Jespersen from Svolvær, who was sent to the Stutthof concentration camp in Poland in 1943, and were given as gifts to his daughter Randi when he returned to Norway after the liberation 1945. The knife blade is marked "Luckenwalde 1945" after a camp south of Berlin.
A total of 10,262 Norwegians lost their lives in the conflict or while imprisoned. Approximately 50,000 Norwegians were arrested by the Germans during the occupation. Of these, 9,000 were consigned to prison camps outside Norway, including Stutthof concentration camp.
