Summary[edit]

Description
English: Lodge at the gates to the Hall Barn Estate. It's not often you see a building that has been painted entirely black. This one has a Carpathian quality about it, as if it had been salvaged from a set at Hammer Films. Professor Pevsner (in the Buckinghamshire volume of 'The Buildings of England') reckons it's Victorian, saying: 'Encrusted with panels which originally formed Gothic bench-ends, Early Renaissance panels from walls or bedsteads, etc.' Sure enough, there are components (particularly the 'barleysugar' columns) which look as if they've been borrowed (or stolen?) from the Great Bed of Ware.
