Summary[edit]
DescriptionLockheed Super Constellation L-1049H N468C in Belize.jpg |
English: This Lockheed L-1049H Super Constellation, built in 1958, was 65 nautical miles off the coast of Belize, en route from Honduras to Miami on May 19, 1976 when the #1 engine ran away, throwing the propeller, damaging the #2 engine and left main landing gear.
She made an emergency landing in Belize City, and though it was written off as a total loss, all three crewmen aboard survived. It was dismantled and trucked across Belize to Blue Creek, a Mennonite town in Northwest Belize. The Mennonites there had built a small dam on the Rio Bravo to generate electricity, and used the hydraulic equipment salvaged from the wreck to control the flow of water. The fuselage was used as a barn or chicken coop, but is now used for storage at a mechanic yard. |
