Summary[edit]

Description Local Japanese in their traditional kimono- there was some kind of an event which had just finished at the wide platform surrounding the Itsuushima shrine and there were plenty of local Japanese dressed to their nines. I narrowly missed a really beautiful Japanese maiden clad in a traditional kimono being led by an elder Japanese lady- she appeared so suddenly and disappeared also equally fast, so much so that there was no time to focus my dSLR on her- the focus was just not locking, and she was gone before I pulled out my iPhone and disengaged the screen lock! Oh well. She did halt later for another group but was gone before I found my bearings once again and turned towards her. Be that as it may, extending from the sides of the haraiden (main hall in a Shinto shrine) of the main shrine is a noh (traditional Japanese art form using masks) stage which dates from 1590. Noh theater performances have long been used to pay homage to the gods through the ritual acting out of key events in Shinto myth. On September 5, 2004, the shrine was severely damaged by Typhoon Songda. The boardwalks and roof were partially destroyed, and the shrine was temporarily closed for repairs. Today anyone can go visit the shrine for only 300 yen- all these people and the event was on the stage or platform surrounding the main shrine which I have just referred to above.
