"Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides: Beautiful! Jungle and coconut groves. Very many wild tropical fruits and ideal lagoon for swimming. Airfields are made of solid coral. Flies are bad but scenery cannot be beat. Inhabited with hostile, dart-blowing pygmies. January 1, 1943 Beginning of a new year for 121. I hope we can keep up our standing we earned at Guadalcanal. Foss's flight left by DC-3 today at 14:00 for Guadalcanal to spend 3 more weeks giving lead medicine to the Japs. The Japs at Cactus are being slaughtered. It was officially reported that in 2 days, 340 Japs were killed in comparison with 8 marines. As today is New Year, we did not work. Received and wrote a letter to Mom. Went to show as usual and saw Mrs. And Mr. Turp Call On the President. It was O.K." From the Lloyd D.
