Summary[edit]

Description

little ricegrass, Stipa divaricata, California, White Mountains, Cottonwood Basin, Poison Creek, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 3005 m (9860 ft).

This distinctive grass species has also gone by the names Piptatherum micranthum and Oryzopsis micrantha in recent decades. When placed in Stipa however, as current opinion has it, the name Stipa micrantha is already in use for a different species, so it has to be given a new name, Stipa divaricata, in reference to its widely spreading flowering branches.

The species is widespread across the interior southwestern United States, up the Rocky Mountain axis into the northern Great Plains, and then westward again across southern Canada, but curiously skips most of the northwestern U.S. It is found in a variety of habitats, but here in the White Mountains near its southwestern limit, it is only found on and around rock outcrops and talus piles at subalpine elevations, up to about 3100 meters (10200 feet). The substrate in this image is Reed Dolomite, but it grows equally readily on granite.

(More laughable Flickr autotags for this image: "animal" and "bear". I suppose that shadow in the background might resemble the profile of a bear's head... ;-)
