Alluding to his early reading of this book, he says-I remember all the accounts there given of the battle-fields and struggles for the liberty of the country, andnone fixed themselves upon my imagination so deeplyas the struggle here at Trenton, New Jersey. Irecollect thinking then, a boy even though I was, thatthere must have been something more than commonthat those men struggled for. I have got the best horse in the country, heshouted to his young listener. *I ran him nine milesin exactly three minutes, and he never fetched a longbreath. * I presume,- said Abe, rather dryly, *he tetched agood many short ones, though.* LINCOLNS LIZARD STORY A country meeting-house, that was used once amonth, was quite a distance from any other house. The preacher, an old-line Baptist, was dressed incoarse linen pantaloons, and shirt of the same material.The pants, manufactured after the old fashion, withbaggy legs and a flap in the front, were made to attachto his frame without the aid of suspenders.
