Lillian Rehberg Honored. Wins First Award for Cello at Music Clubs' Convention. San Francisco, California; June 21, 1931 (Associated Press) Miss Lillian Rehberg of New York won the first award for cello playing at the seventeenth biennial convention of the National Federation of Music Clubs here tonight. Lillian Rehberg was one of four successful applicants in a field of 223 instrumentalists and vocalists to whom prizes were awarded in New York last April in the seventh annual competitive auditions held by the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation. The other winners were singers. In the preliminary auditions held by the National Music League of New York City, thirty-one candidates were chosen before the finals were heard. The award carried with it a New York debut recital, with all expenses paid by the foundation, which was established seven years ago by Mr. Naumburg in memory of his father, Liken Naumburg, long a patron of music. Miss Rehberg. daughter of a Western choral conductor, studied the cello with Hans Hess and Alfred Wallenstein. She appeared with the Symphony Orchestra of Chicago, her native city, and on February 15 in recital at the Barbizon Club in this city. On the latter occasion her playing of a program of items by Tchaikovsky, Sammartini, Cyril Scott, Ravel. Faure and Boulanger was described in The Times as being "marked by light touch and singing cello tone, coupled with artistic discrimination as an interpreter" and revealing "natural musicianship and a technical accomplishment of individual merit."
