Summary[edit]

Description
English: This 1893 cartoon ran a few weeks after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy in a Minnesota newspaper. The "sandwiches" refer to the "Sandwich Islands," the nickname of the Hawaiian Islands.

LILIUOKALINA [sic]---How much can you lend me on this Honolulu crown? PAWNBROKER---I might have let you have a few sandwiches a month ago, but it isn't worth a wisp of hay now.
