Lightning F6 XR726 'BE' from 11 Squadron, RAF Binbrook. You got really close to aircraft at airshows in those days! Built as an F3 in 1965, then converted to F6 and to 60 MU Station Flight. To 5 Squadron in February 1968, damaged by an engine starter fire at Binbrook in October 1973. Later joined 23 Squadron, lost a rudder in flight on 15 August 1979 but landed safely. Then to 5 and 11 Squdrons, finally withdrawn in July 1987. In 1988 when the last of the Lightnings were retired, XR726 went to a scrapyard in Rossington, Yorkshire. In 1992 the nose was acquired by a collector in Harrogate, with the rest being cut up in 1993. Photo: Dick Gilbert, RAF Manston 70th Anniversary Open Day, 31 May 1986. |
