Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Detail of an original street and plaza lighting fixture at L'Enfant Plaza in Washington, D.C., in the United States. The cruciform base is centered atop two steel supporting poles. A central emerges from this base to hold a fifth light. All four light fixtures on the cruciform base, as well as the central light fixture above it, extend slightly below the point at which they are joined to the entire structure. The overall effect is of a candlebra. The steel poles and base are painted a dark grey. A large glass sphere protects each bulb, and helps disperse the light. The fixtures show significant signs of deterioration due to weather.

This original lighting fixture was designed by I. M. Pei, and garnered extensive praise by architectural critics at the time of the Plaza's completion in the late 1960s.

L'Enfant Plaza and L'Enfant Promenade were designed by I. M. Pei for developer William Zeckendorf in the early 1960s. Pei also designed the North Building and South Building, two office buildings which border the plaza. These were constructed in the late 1960s. Vlastimil Koubek designed the West Building (now the United States Postal Service headquarters), which was constructed in 1969, and the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel, which was constructed in 1971.
