t the dayof my visit. The following day a party of Stanford University students wereunable to land on account of the heavy surf. We first took a view of the rookery from the mainland. The cormorantswere very tame, remaining on their nests while we clambered down the slopingrocks and while we stood watching them on the same level only a few yardsaway. They were safe, however, from its precipitous \valls of rock, effectuallycutting off further advance. They were equally tame when the boat drewnear as we approached from the water. The clefts in the sides of the rock were occupied by Baird cormorants andthe top by Brandts. There were comparatively few of the former, but of theBrandt cormorants there were upwards of two hundred pairs. Their nestscoveied the top of the rock, every available situation being occupied. Thesurface was so uneven that all the nests could not be seen from one spot. Stand-ing in one place I counted one hundred and eighteen. U. S. NATIONAL MUSEUM BULLETIN 121 PL. 53

In ten, the young were just out of the shell. In theremaining one they were as large as spring chiclvens. The eggs in seventy-seven nests were counted by a companion. Twenty-one contained four eggs each;thirty-six, tliree eggs; fourteen, two eggs ; three, five eggs ; three, one egg. Themost frequent numbers were therefore three and four, probably the ordinaryclutches. Sardines were lying in little bunches near the nests, apparently placed thereas food for the birds that were setting. The smell from the accumulated excrement was sickening. The sides of therock were so daubed that it appeared to be white toward the top. Flies swarmedabout the rookery. It was not until I fired my gun that the brooding birds beg
