lacing ColonelQuinbys regiment of rifles in front, in column bydivision, I directed the other regiments to follow inline of batde, in the order of the Wisconsin Second,New York Seventy-ninth, and New York Sixty-ninth. Quinbys Brave Advance. Quinbys regiment advanced steadily down the hilland up the ridge, from which he opened fire upon theenemy, who had made another stand on ground veryfavorable to him, and the regiment continued ad-vancing as the enemy gave way, till the head of thecolumn reached the point near which Ricketts batterywas so severely cut up. The other regiments de-scended the hill in line of batde under a severecannonade, and, the ground affording comparativeshelter from the enemys artillery, they changed di-rection by the right flank, and followed the road beforementioned. At the point where this road crosses thebridge to our left front the ground was swept by amost severe fire of artillery, rifles, and musketry, andwe saw, in succession, several regiments driven from
