FREDERICK MAX MULLER 10431 The first question which we have to answer refers to thedate of these collections; and dates in the history of Sanskritliterature are always difficult points. Fortunately, as we shallsee, we can in this case fix the date of the (Pan^atantra > atleast, by means of a translation into ancient Persian, which wasmade about five hundred and fifty years after Christ, thougheven then we can only prove that a collection somewhat like the(Pan^atantra> must have existed at that time; but we cannotrefer the book, in exactly that form in which we now possess it,to that distant period.
