English: Antenna of the Lichtbogen radio transmitter in Malabar. This type of antenna is a multiwire "flattop" antenna of a type widely used by powerful radio stations for transmitting on the longwave radio bands during the wireless telegraphy era up to the 1920s. It consists of multiple vertical wires extending upward from the transmitter building, with the tops bent into a long horizontal "top-load" segment, like a clothesline. In this antenna the wires are suspended by support wires extending across a valley between two ridges. The vertical portion of the wires was the radiating element, functioning as an electrically short monopole antenna, while the "flattop" segment functioned as a capacitive top-load, increasing the antenna's capacitance to ground, increasing the current in the upper portion of the antenna and thus the radiated power. |
