Description
Español: El gráfico representa el vocabulario empleado principalmente en la América colonial española para designar a los "mestizos" según la "raza" de sus padres. El vocabulario está tomado principalmente del Diccionario de la Lengua Española (Real Academia Española) y de las anotaciones en los "retratos de castas" de autores como Miguel Cabrera o el Anónimo del s. XVIII que se conserva en el Museo Nacional del Virreinato. EJEMPLO DE USO: en el gráfico (arriba) vemos que a la descendencia de español/a e indio/a se llama "mestizo" o "cholo". A la descendencia de un mestizo con un español se llama "cuarterón"; y a la descendencia de un cuarterón con un "mulato" (descendencia de "negro" i.e., procedente del Árica subsahariana) y español) se llama "tentenelaire"
English: This graph representa the vocabulary used in the Spanish speaking American countries during colonial times to designate different kinds of miscegenation. The vocabulary is taken mainly from the Diccionario de la Lengua Española (Real Academia Española) and the insriptions upon the drawings of people calles "retratos de castas" froma painters like Miguel Cabrera or the c. 18th Anonymoys kept at the Museo Nacional del Virreinato. EXAMPLE: The offspring of a Spanish (Castillian) male or female and an American indigenous ("indio") was called "mestizo" or "cholo". The offspring of a "mestizo" and a "español" of any sex is called "cuarterón"; and the offspring of a cuarterón and a "mulato" (him- or herself being the offspring of an African indigenous ("negro") y español) is called "tentenelaire"
