Summary[edit]
DescriptionLewiston Municipal Building - fmr Lewiston High School (aka "The Red Brick Schoolhouse") - Lewiston, New York - 20200730.jpg |
English: The so-called Red Brick Schoolhouse, 145 North 4th Street, Lewiston, New York, July 2020. A handsome building indeed, the front façade of this two-story beauty is dominated by a large central tower, framed by brick quoins and topped by a tent-roofed octagonal cupola. Round-arched windows (as well as one oculus) on the tower contrast with the segmental-arched windows of the building itself, but ubiquitous are the decorative brick corbelling and ornamental keystone voussoirs adorning the fenestration (save on the ground floor, where simpler splayed lintels predominate). All of this adds up to an interesting early iteration of the Colonial Revival style, tempered with Romanesque Revival influences that are more familiar ground for architect John H. Coxhead. The building served as a school for most of its existence; first it was Lewiston High School (superseded in 1950 by the current Lew-Port High School in Youngstown), then as an elementary school, then for a time as the public library. It's now the home of the village's municipal offices, as well as the Lewiston History Museum and a bevy of recreational programs that take place in the former gymnasium. |
