I was in a taxi, stuck in Mumbai traffic, when I heard someone tapping on my window. It wasn't the first time but the sudden noise, breaking the bubble in which I was surrounded, couldn't help but surprise me once again. This little girl and her younger sister were asking me for rupees. Even though the driver had told me not to give them anything, I promised myself not to waste another opportunity: I wanted to try to take Steve McCurry's famous photo of the woman and child. I knew the motivation was selfish, but I was going to give her money, so what harm could I do? I tried to resist but the insistence of their blows continued to destroy the barrier that separated us, making it impossible to pretend not to see or hear them. Of course I knew what the driver had told me: they would give the money to their parents and continue with the same life. However, I took the camera and immediately the girl understood that she would get something from me. I took very few shots, without even framing because I was ashamed, as if I were exploiting her, so I immediately gave her 100 rupees and she disappeared. His little sister, however, kept knocking. I thought he wouldn't insist, after all I had just given something (more or less the fee of the taxi service) to the other one. Instead she followed the car, running, and even though she could barely reach the window, I could see her dirty little hand on it. When the car stopped again I thought his expressions were simply an act, as if he were practicing repeating the same expressions as his sister. So I stopped paying attention to her and eventually she left. Then I looked at the sidewalk and saw her crying. It was the nervous, helpless cry of a frustrated child, and I understood that even if she was acting, her hunger, her misery were still real. She kept wiping her tears with her t-shirt (probably the only one she had) when my taxi finally took me away. Suddenly, I realized that the other girl wasn't her sister, but a competitor. And that she must have thought it was very unfair that she had chased the car through traffic and achieved nothing, unlike the other one. That image struck me so much that, once I got out of the taxi, I walked back. I found her and gave her 100 rupees. Like the other little girl she took the money and ran away. I knew that it wouldn't change anything in his life, that it would be one of the many pains that would punctuate his existence, but I couldn't bear the responsibility of that cry. I'm not even sure he recognized me.
