Description
English: La mosquée Neratze à Réthymnon, également connue sous le nom de mosquée Gazi Hussein, se trouve à proximité de la place Petichaki. À l'origine, c'était une église vénitienne dédiée à Santa Maria, devenue ensuite un monastère augustin. Lorsque les Turcs ottomans ont occupé la ville en 1657, leur chef, Gazi Hussein Pacha, l'a transformée en mosquée, dotée d'un minaret avec deux balcons pour appeler à la prière. Ce minaret était le plus haut de la ville.

En 1925, lorsque la Crète a été libérée des Ottomans, la mosquée a été transformée à nouveau en une église chrétienne.... Rethymnon est probablement la ville de Crète qui a le mieux conservé son caractère ancien avec beaucoup de vestiges vénitiens et turcs. Réthymnon s’est développée à nouveau quand les Vénitiens, alors maîtres de l’île, cherchèrent à établir un centre commercial intermédiaire entre Héraklion et La Canée. La vieille ville d’aujourd’hui date quasiment entièrement de l’époque vénitienne. Extrait de Wikipedia
