Le fig. 94 e 95, conforme alle esperienze di Cadellsui piegamenti di strati compressi dargilla, illustranola struttura dei Massicci Centrali : la figura a destrarappresenta la struttura a ventaglio, mentre quella asinistra mostra un rovesciamento, e suggerisce una spie-gazione possibile per lassenza degli schisti cristalliniin alcuni luoghi a sud della catena. Da Servoz quasi fino a Les Houches, sui due latidellArve, sincontrano strati Carboniferi che si esten-dono verso est in due fasce : una, da Servoz verso MontBuet, laltra che comincia sotto Argentière, passa sulCol des Montets, va giù pel Trient, fino a Vernayaz,e attraverso il Rodano al Monte di Fully. Le ampie vallidi Chable e di Liddes sono pure dovute alla relativa 282 Geologia della Svizzera

Capitolo XVI 283 erodibilità degli schisti antracitiferi appartenenti a questaperiodo. I tre principali rappresentanti degli strati Carboniferisono: i.° schisti argillosi che frequentemente contengonoavanzi vegetali ; 2.0 arenarie micacee che spesso somigliano moltoa degli schisti cristallini; 3.0 il noto conglomerato detto Puddinga di Val-lorsina. Questa puddinga risulta di ciottoli rotolati e di massiche talvolta sorpassano il diametro di un piede. Essi do-vettero venir giù per opera di torrenti molto somigliantiai torrenti alpini dei nostri giorni, e rivelano perciò lapresenza di montagne più antiche. I ciottoli soi%o principalmente di roccia primitiva,soprattutto di gneiss, ma non comprendono granito oporfido, di modo che queste rocce non poterono essereallo scoperto, ma dovettero essere nascoste e protetteda altri strati.
