Summary[edit]

Description

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is monitoring a narrow finger of lava that has broken away from the west edge of the still erupting June 27th flow field below the crack system and that is moving to the north at rates of several hundred meters per day. On Thursday morning the leading edge of the new flow was located the leading edge as being approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) above the intersection of Pāhoa Village Road and Highway 130, near the Pāhoa Marketplace. The flow has reached an area where several lines of steepest descent nearly converge due to flat topography. Until the flow passes this area of flat topography, the future flow path is uncertain.

Lava in the new flow is traveling part of the way in an open channel, as can be seen by this December 1 photograph and thermal image of the same area. Some sections of the channel are completely covered by crust (forming a lava tube), while other sections were open with a smoothly flowing surface.
