Português: Laura Veridiana de Castro e Almeida (1870-1964) Laura Veridiana de Castro (1870-1964) nasceu na rua da Carreira, no Funchal, a 7 de novembro de 1870, filha de D. Francisco Xavier de Castro e Almeida, natural de Goa, de uma conhecida linhagem de Castros envolvida na administração colonial do Extremo Oriente português desde o século XVI. Após frequentar o Liceu no Funchal, casou-se com Feliciano José Soares (1886-1952), natural de Aveiro, escritor e posteriormente diretor do Diário de Notícias do Funchal. Foi fundadora do “Lactário” da rua da Mouraria, Dama de Caridade do Hospício Princesa D. Amélia, e membro da Ação Católica. Como escritora, dedicou-se sobretudo ao género infanto-juvenil, à produção de textos católicos, destacando-se também como tradutora, sendo ainda uma reputada declamadora e pianista. Ao seu círculo de amizades pertenciam Luísa Grande, Luzia, a sua prima Virgínia de Castro e Almeida (1874-1945), e Amália Vaz de Carvalho (1847-1921). Morreu na Calçada do Pico, n.º 6, a 13 de fevereiro de 1964. (Roteiro Mulheres do Funchal, n.º 14, 2020) |
