Summary[edit]
DescriptionLathmaar Holi.jpg |
English: Nandgaon, the holy land of Hindus in Martura district Uttar Pradesh in India. A city that is the birthplace of Goddess Radha and the hometown of Lord Krishna. India a country of rich history and customs famous for its heritage and culture. Holi the festival of colors is one of those customs, which is being celebrated around the world.
Lathmaar Holi, a typical tradition of celebrating Holi. In which, women beat men with sticks to celebrate the festival of Holi, a day that gives freedom to women to overpower men in a patriarchal society. During the first day of celebration, the men from Nandgaon village the hometown of Lord Krishna go to Barsana village the birthplace of Goddess Radha. There, they flirt with the women of Barsana and in the response to it, they beat men with the wooden stick, and overpower them. This tradition traces its roots from the period of Lord Krishna, who used to go to Barsana to meet his love of life Goddess Radha. It’s an art of beating and being beaten, but it is losing the charm as the young generation is not trained in it, nor they are willing to learn the art of lath-maar Holi celebration. I traveled to Nandgaon this year in February to document the Lathmaar Holi and the essence of joy among the people of Nandgaon and Barsana villages in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India.
