Summary[edit]

Description LOT-Stereograph-DC-4: Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C. Caption: “The Department of the Navy Yard contains some of the most expressive exhibitions on this continent of machinery in operation. Here are the great lathes for turning, boring and rifling the steel breech loading rifles of the U.S. Navy. The guns are forged at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and are brought here in their rough state to be finished. The immense lathes do their work almost noiselessly, with ease, smoothness, precision, and deliberation, which bespeak a reserve of strength and power irresistible. The inter dimensions are: length 647 feet, and width, 135 feet. Photograph from 1898 or 1899. (6/5/2015).
