Description
English: Employment up 105,000 compared with the previous quarter

Comparing November 2013-January 2014 with the previous three months, there was a rise in the number of employed people, and a fall in the number of people who were unemployed. The number of people not in the labour force fell slightly. Comparing November 2013 to January 2014 with the previous three months, the number of people in employment increased by 105,000 (to reach 30.19 million), the number of unemployed people fell by 63,000 (to reach 2.33 million) and the number of people not in the labour force (economically inactive) aged from 16 to 64 fell by 19,000 (to reach 8.90 million). Compared with a year earlier, for both men and women, employment is higher and unemployment is lower.

For November 2013-January 2014, 77.3% of men aged from 16 to 64 were in work, up from 76.5% a year earlier and 75.4% two years earlier, but lower than before the 2008-09 downturn. For November 2013-January 2014, 67.2% of women aged from 16 to 64 were in work, up from 66.6% a year earlier and 65.4% two years earlier.

For November 2013-January 2014, 7.4% of men in the labour force were unemployed, down from 8.2% a year earlier and 8.9% two years earlier, but higher than before the 2008-09 downturn. For November 2013-January 2014, 6.9% of women in the labour force were unemployed, down from 7.3% a year earlier and 7.6% two years earlier, but higher than before the 2008-09 downturn.

For November 2013-January 2014, 16.4% of men aged from 16 to 64 were not in the labour force, unchanged from a year earlier but down from 17.1% two years earlier. For November 2013-January 2014, 27.7% of women aged from 16 to 64 were not in the labour force, down from 28.1% a year earlier and 29.0% two years earlier. Since records began in 1971 the percentage of women aged from 16 to 64 not in the labour force has been gradually falling while the percentage of men aged from 16 to 64 not in the labour force has been gradually rising.
