Description

(public display, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, Illinois, USA)

This is a rare metamorphic rock called "lapis lazuli". It is dominated by a blue feldspathoid mineral called lazurite, (Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(SO4,S,Cl)2 - sodium calcium chloro-sulfo-aluminosilicate-sulfate. The highest-quality lapis lazuil on Earth is from the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan. Other lapis occurrences are Chile and Russia.
