| Description |
English: Laid up shipping on the River Fal The sheltered deep waters of the Fal have long been a favoured spot for the laying up of shipping in times of low demand, providing a useful source of income for the Local Authority. In the boom times of recent years such lay-ups have been virtually non-existent. However, the current downturn in world trade has seen a great reversal of this situation. Currently there are regularly half a dozen or so ships moored in Falmouth Bay in 'hot lay-up', that is, with all systems operational and fully crewed, awaiting orders. But there are now many in the Fal (currently 9) in 'cold lay-up' i.e. with systems running at the minimum and with a skeleton crew. These are usually destined for the breakers' yards. Seen here are three car carriers (left to right Autoprestige, Autoline, and Autotransporter) and immediately behind there is another and two container ships (the container ship San Francisco visible on the left, then the Autopremier (IMO 9131943) and Santa Giovanna (IMO 9126479) mostly hidden). |
