Summary[edit]
DescriptionLadakh1981-171.jpg |
Jammu and Kashmir in 1981, Avalokiteśvara and Maitreya. ca. 1000 CE. Stone stele. H: ca. 120 and 180 cm. Dras, Kashmir. Dras (aka Drass), Kashmir (between Zoji la and Kargil) The stone sculptures represented at Drass are Avalokitesvara, a six-foot-tall (180 cm) standing Maitreya, with three devotees depicted kneeling below, reaching up to his knees. On the left side of the head of Maitreya is carved a very small human figure, and to the right, there is a Sarada inscription. The whole epigraph may be translated as : ‘Homage. These images of Lokesvara (i.e. AvalokiteSvara) and Maitreya were installed by KyaSa for the increase of the religious merit of all living beings and for the glory of Atha who was a horseman and who belonged to the family of Tharana. The architect was Naddha, resident of Dra-ala.’ Another figure is that of a man riding a horse, wielding a sword in his left hand and the bridle in the right; there is a depiction of a human figurine and a lotus flower also. These sculptures are placed in a row next to the road (Srinagar-Leh Highway) and probably date to the eighth century AD. A tin roof has now been built over them for protection. the western pillar (on the left) is called "CHOMO" (Jo-mo) ཇོ་མོ , “Woman of high rank, goddess, nun" by the local population, because it is believed to be a woman, actually it's Maitreya Buddha, as the epigraph attests |
