Summary[edit]

Description
English: "La fontaine turbulente" (the turbulent fountain) at the mathematics exhibit at the Cité des Sciences.

This fascinating objects is a very elegant example of deterministic chaos. On each arm of the wheel is a bucket with a hole. At the top, a trickle of water flows into the bucket beneath it. This small force is sufficient to move the wheel. Each bucket in turn receives some drops. Below the inclined plane, blades submerged in water regulate the system. The wheel, made of carbon fibre, turns with little friction, and the rate flow of water is perfectly regular. Yet the rotation stops, restarts, changes direction, accelerates, slows down, without ever being able to predict what will happen the next instant; the parameters that influence the movement are adjusted in such a manner that a tiny perturbation is enough to change the behaviour of the system.[1]
