"Idea de una religiosa mortificada": engraving of a nun in full habit crucified in emulation of Christ

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Credit: Women of the Book Collection, Sheridan Libraries of Johns Hopkins University. Frontispiece engraving in the first edition of a guide published in order to satisfy the natural curiosity of nuns for the practice of devotional mortification of the flesh. The author, Manuel de Espinosa, attempts to set out a full manual of Franciscan teachings on this subject, and the striking engraving depicts an unusual sight: a nun in full habit crucified in emulation of Christ, with legends describing the mortification of each body part.
