Title
LVPL-B47064
Description
English:
Cast copper alloy seal matrix dating to the Medieval period. The seal has a circular face with a hexagonally faceted shaft. The object has a quatrefoil attachment loop. The seal matrix has a central device depicting a lamb and flag, around which is the inscription 'ECCE AGNVS DEI'. This translates from the Latin as 'Behold the lamb of God'. Seals with the Lamb of God design were quite common in the fourteenth century, especially in the 1330s. A similar example is no.13, p36, E & P Saunders, (1991). The object has a dark grey patina and is in good condition. The remains of gilding can be seen on the shaft of the handle.
Depicted place (County of findspot) East Riding of Yorkshire
