English: Red barn at the Stora Hyttringe farm, Motala Municipality, Sweden, probably built around the year 1900. The winding country road passes right through the homestead, with living houses among the trees on the left and the farm buildings to the right. While this was a practical arrangement for centuries, it is a traffic hazard in later decades, the speed limit being 70 km/hour (45 mph). The large building has a brick stables (ladugård) for cows and horses with hay magazine (höskulle) on the upper floor. Cows are fed by dropping down hay through holes in the magazine floor / stable ceiling. A stone ramp from the country road allows horse and carriage to drive right in with the new hay harvest. The ramp is partly roofed, allowing a parking garage for carriages. To the right is a "round" (eight-corner) hall (loge, rundloge) for threshing. The wooden parts of the building are painted with the special Swedish red paint (Falu rödfärg), a biproduct from the production of copper at Falun, allegedly with the function to protect wood. Corners and windows are decorated with white panels, in accordance with Swedish traditions. It doesn't get much more Swedish than this (TM). |
