Description

Piazza Unità d'Italia, ligger precis invid Adriatiska havet. En av de platser där man kan sitta och tänka att man skulle kunna ta motorbåten och resa över havet från Italien till Italien.

Det gigantiska torget ligger bakom mig här, och byggdes medan Trieste fortfarande var en del av det österrikiska kejsardömet; en av dess viktigaste hamnstäder.

Före 1919 hette det Piazza Grande, och på Slovenska talar man tydligen fortfarande om Veliki trg (stora torget). Efter Kaisern kom Il Duce. Härstädes levande slovener fick byta ut sina slaviskklingande namn mot något italienskt. Kriget kom. Den stora synagogan står visserligen kvar. Samtiden är en tunn förnissa över det förgångna.

Frihet är det bästa ting där sökas kan i världen kring.

skaldar biskop Thomas (d 1443) i sin frihetsvisa. Han representerade väl påven, om man skall vara noggrann.

Herrarna kommer, herrarna går och det är långt mellan Italien och Italien, åtminstone i en öppen adriatisk motorbåt. Enklare att ta tåget.
