Description
Français : Inauguration de l'exposition d'oeuvres du sculpteur allemand Arno Breker (1900-1991) à l'Orangerie des Tuileries, le 15 mai 1942.

À partir de la gauche : le Ministre de l'Education du gouvernement de Pétain : Abel Bonnard, Jacques Benoist- Mechin (homme politique, collaborateur), Mrs. Breker, Arno Breker (sculpteur, architecte), Fernand de Brinon (homme politique, membre du gouvernement de Pétain), le Général Franz Barckhausen et le Gauleiter Fritz Sauckel. Le poète Jean Cocteau, ami d'Arno Breker, assiste à l'inauguration.


C’est donc un artiste « officiel », sinon engagé, qui est exposé à l’Orangerie, invité par la Ville de Paris et le gouvernement français en 1942. Du fait de ce contexte, et indépendamment de l’image elle-même, son exposition comporte un message idéologique et symbolique fort. Dans la capitale des arts, elle est censée démontrer aux Parisiens la réalité, la grandeur et la majesté d’un art « nazi » dont Breker est d’ailleurs l’un des plus illustres contributeurs. Politiquement, un tel événement doit aussi convaincre que les occupants ne sont ni des barbares ni des oppresseurs, eux qui mettent en avant et rendent accessibles à tous la haute culture (celle de l’avenir) promue par le IIIe Reich.
