English: [top] L'Exécution de la Punition du Fouet. [top] In a public square a black slave tied to a column is flogged by another black slave. Police, other slaves, and native Americans watch the punishment. [bottom] Nègres ào Tronco. Three slaves are punished by having their legs confined in stocks. Includes rats, whips, jug, bowls, broom, mats, and leather strap. Text states that slave owners could, for a fee, have their slaves punished by the police. Leaders of groups of escaped slaves were punished by being flogged to death in stages at different locations in the town.The lithographs in this book were made from drawings made by Debret during his fifteen-year residence (1816-1831) in Brazil.
