Kyōyō, Six Sennin, 1914. Sumi ink and soft colors on silk. 22" x 75". The painting depicts six sennin, or Taoist immortals, in ragged clothing and living in the mountains of China. One unleashes his spirit as a dragon, another presents a carving of Daruma, while two others speak with a creature of Chinese mythology. From here.

  • Note: Possibly the sennin are Buddhist Arhats, rather than Daoists. In which case, the painting is probably one of a set of two or more, with the other depicting more of the Arhats; usually the grouping is 16 in Japanese depictions, or 18 in the Chinese style. .
