Deutsch: Die Grafik veranschaulicht, wie es zur Leuchterscheinung „Komet“ kommt: Die allermeiste Zeit bleibt ein Komet von der Erde aus völlig unsichtbar. Erst wenn sich der Komet der Sonne annähert, fängt er in einer Entfernung von etwa 5 AE (AE = Astronomische Einheit = Mittlerer Abstand zwischen Erde und Sonne) langsam an zu leuchten. Dabei erzeugt der Sonnenwind um den Kometen zuerst eine nebelige Hülle - die sog. Koma. Dann wachsen dem Kometen zwei Schweife - ein bläulicher Gasschweif und ein diffuser weißlicher Staubschweif. Die beiden Schweife sind immer von der Sonne abgewandt. Während der Gasschweif gerade ist, wird der Staubschweif durch den Sonnenwind gekrümmt. Am sonnennächsten Punkt können die Schweife leuchtstarker Kometen die Länge einer vollen AE erreichen. Nähert sich der Komet auf seinem Rückweg einer Entfernung von etwa 5 AE an, erlischt er wieder. |
