[Meed journal: "The outfit for one man was about 1000 pound weight. It comprised sled, shovel, axe, a 7 foot long whip-saw for sawing logs into lumber and other tools for building a boat, tent, blankets and cooking utensils. The gold-pan served also as a dish pan, washing bowl, mixing pan for sourdough bread and baking tin for the same. In addition, grubs to keep him alive for several months was necessary as the country along the trail provided nothing. Flour, dried beans and sow-belly were the staples. Evaporated prunes and apricots helped to prevent scurvy. Thus several trips were necessary as a strong man could not carry more than 80 pounds on his back at a time. The gaps on the left of the procession are stations where the tired ones dropped out of the line for a temporary rest, while the stream of men went doggedly on and permitted no obstruction. The downhill trip "light" from the summit was accomplished by simply sliding down-hill through the snow without regard to style."
