Handwritten in album: The woman has sprinkled ashes, made from shavings of new paddles, along the path to keep devils from hoodooing the hunting PH Coll 49.25a

The tribe Bernardi stayed with was very superstitious and the sprinkling of ashes was demonstrates this. The Eskimos believed that the ashes would keep the devils from bringing bad luck to the hunt. The woman sprinkled the ashes while the men finished packing the boat for the hunt.
