Summary[edit]
DescriptionKing Solomon Meeting the Queen of Sheba (3434884321).jpg |
It was the trumpets in the background more than anything that convinced me this window depicts the meeting of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. That's not much to go on, is it? Well, Ethiopian identity, ideology, history, and politics are all deeply connected to the story of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. It seems inconceivable that Emperor Haile Selassie I, an emperor of a Solomonic dynasty claiming legitimacy through descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, would build an immense cathedral and not allude in some way to the seminal event in Ethiopian history. This must be it. The elements are all present: apart from the horns, there's a king (left), a female in an Ethiopian crown and pearls (right), who must be the Queen of Sheba, and minions displaying the Queen's tribute to King Solomon. Call me snarky, but this Queen of Sheba looks like a Breck WASP Girl fresh out of Miss Porter's Academy circa 1947 without having ever seen a copy of Seventeen Magazine or Cosmopolitan. What on earth could King Solomon have seen in her? And her feet - they're scary huge! If you want to see what I consider a more authentic rendering of that famous meeting and its principals, take a look at the painting below by the esteemed Ethiopian artist Maître Afewerk Tekle, which hangs in St. George's Cathedral in Addis. If you click on the image, it will take you back to where the photo is posted, and you'll be able to enlarge it. If I've misread this window, and in many ways I hope I have, please help me set the record straight by explaining what's actually happening in this picture. In the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. |
