h American Indian work late in the eighteenthcentury. The one possible advance that can be made in thebreech-loader of to-day is, it is supposed, towards theevolution of a convenient repeating gun ; and in thecollection is a smooth-bore flint-lock repeating gun ofItalian workmanship (Bologna), third quarter of theeighteenth century. I will only mention one more anticipation of to-day—a double-barrelled flint-lock fowling-piece and riflecombined, as in the well-known Paradox. It wasmade in Paris towards the end of the eighteenthcentury, and presented in 1817 to the Prince Regentby Lieutenant Brooks of the Blues, accompanied bya note to Sir B. Bloomfield, in which it is stated thatthe gun belonged formerly to the Emperor Napoleon, 99 King Edward VII. as a Sportsman and was constantly used by Bonaparte in his shootingexcursions in the forests of Fontainebleau, Marly, andSt. Germain. The note further states that he hadthe gun with him during his residence in the Isleof Elba. lOO h.ft it

BALMORAL CASTLE iai«s«s«^ CHAPTER IV BALMORAL Some of King Edwards earliest recollections musthave been associated with Balmoral, and as HisMajesty was a constant visitor from his childhood to the end, it was there that a not inconsiderable portionof his life was passed. Balmoral became a Royalresidence in the middle of the nineteenth century, and how devotedly attached Queen Victoria alwayswas to her Scottish home she herself has left onrecord in the volume which she graciously issuedin 1868, Leaves from the Journal of Our Life inthe Highlands. Queen Victorias first impressionsare dated Friday, September 8, 1848, and we findthe then existing mansion described as a prettylittle castle in the old Scottish style. There is apicturesque tower and garden in front, with a highwooded hill ; at the back there is wood down to the Dee ; and the hills rise all around. HerMajesty was enchanted with the scenery. To theleft, her description proceeds, you look towardsthe beautiful hills surrounding
