Thefishing is of the most sporting description, being allcasting from the banks and wading. The river israpid—for its size the most rapid in Scotland, a factwhich in a great measure counterbalances the com-paratively small size of the fish—and the pools wherethey lie are many. And now a word of the good men and true whoselives have been devoted to the care of the forest.When Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort firstcame to Balmoral in 1848, Mr. John Grant was incharge of the forest, and he remained as head stalkerto the Queen until 1874. The Queen, writing of himin a note to her Journal, thus described him : Heis an excellent man, most trustworthy, of singularshrewdness and discretion, and most devotedly attachedto the Prince and myself. He also is referred to byQueen Victoria in a note to her Journal : * He is anexcellent man, and was much liked by the Prince ; healways led the dogs when the Prince went out stalk-ing. Donald Stewart retired in 1901, having been inQueen Victorias service for fifty-three years. Hedied at Danzig Shiel in the Ballochbuie Forest on theloth August 1909, at the age of eighty-three years. In 1901 Mr. Arthur Grant, a son of Mr. JohnGrant, was appointed to succeed Donald Stewart ashead stalker. Arthur Grant was a great favourite withKing Edward, to whom he was known from boyhood.Spending, as they did, many days together in the greatsolitudes of the forest, an intimacy sprang up betweenthe King and his head stalker of a kind that wasprobably accorded to no other person.
