Description

On 6 January 1926 Arthur D Mead of the Auckland City engineering staff drew this plan of tracks in the Tongariro National Park, from Whakapapa to the Waihohonu Hut, and on to the Ketetahi Hut (he dates the plan 1925 in error – his accompanying report is dated 1926).

Tramping in the National Park was a popular summer activity in the 1920’s and 1930’s, especially over the Christmas/New Year break. There was a growing demand for more huts, campgrounds and hostels to allow people to explore the Park more easily. Various clubs and societies, such as the Alpine Sports Club and the Tongariro Tramping Club asked to be allowed to erect their own huts. In 1934 the Tongariro National Park Board resolved to give such requests “favourable consideration”.

One tramping party photographed their trip (c.1927), and their album was donated to the Department of Conservation in 1995. This is now held by Archives New Zealand Auckland Regional Office. The images here show two of the party crossing a bridge over the Whakapapanui Stream, near the start of the marked track, and the group at the Ketetahi Hut at the end of the marked track.
