Summary[edit]

Description
English: Decagon-shaped receptacle made of stag's antler plates from a Germanic woman's burial - Grave 2 of the grave field Fenéki Street at Keszthely-Fenékpuszta
  • Zala County, Hungary

This find lay in the fill dirt of the burial of a 16- to 18-year-old woman and presumably dates to the period after 568, when the Lombards departed for Italy. It is nonetheless undoubtedly of Germanic origin.

This burial was in Grave 2 of the grave field Fenéki Street at Keszthely-Fenékpuszta, a site comprising ten graves located north of the late Roman fortress of Keszthely-Fenékpuszta. Corpses were interred in individual, narrow burial holes. The actual holes were covered with wooden boards. In addition, there were some interments in tree trunk coffins.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Balatoni Múzeum Keszthely.
