Title
Kent-F04273. Romano-British. Toilet accessory. Nail cleaner (broken). Back view.
Description
English: 1st Century. Romano-British, copper alloy, cast, broken two-thirds of a nail cleaner, once part of a manicure set. Length 26.1mm, Width 7.6mm, Thickness 5.2mm, Weight 1.0g. This example has a folded over suspension loop which has a single, central, vertical inscised line. The plain, flattened stem bulges out for gripping between thumb and finger while the forked tip - the device for actually cleaning is missing. This would have formed part of a toilet instrument set also consisting of tweezers, pick and ear scoop cleaner. These were often hung on a chatelaine from a belt. Attractive dark brown/black patina but with a rusty surface deposit probably formed as a result of the water logged soil conditions. Ref. Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts, R.
